My first experience working with children was when I was an A+ mentor in highschool. Then, I got a job as a SACC (School-Age Child Care) substitute, where I had a classroom of children from ages 3-10 for around 10-12 hours a day!

Having a connection with the family and children! I want to make sure that I am close with the family I work with, and I want the kids to feel safe with me. Having a bond with them is what it’s all about!
My experience with special needs children...
I was an A+ mentor in highschool — I went to an elementary school nearby, and went into a kindergarten class for around an hour a day for a few semesters of highschool. In my kindergarten class for senior year, there was a boy who was mute/autistic. He clung to me, and knew that I was somebody that was safe for him. When I did my graduation walk through, I walked by his class, and he said “Ms. Lexi,” and gave me a big hug! I had never heard him speak before, so I knew it was a special moment. Additionally, at SACC (School-Age Child Care), I had a boy with down syndrome in my class. I made sure that he never felt left out, and if he needed a little extra attention I made sure he had it.
