A little bit about me

Hi! I’m Annie. I spent six years as an au pair for two families, one in Highland Park here in Chicago and one in San Francisco, caring for kids from newborn all the way up to sixteen. Before that I was a summer camp counselor.

I’m originally from Austria, and I trained in culinary and hospitality there, so cooking is a big part of how I take care of people. I’m also a designer, which means a lot of art projects, drawing and messy creative afternoons with the kids.

I’m warm but I do hold boundaries, because kids feel safest when they know what to expect. I drive, I’m comfortable running the household side of things, and I genuinely love the daily rhythm of it: school runs, snacks, homework, rehearsals, bedtime.

Mostly I just really like kids. Six years in, that hasn’t changed.

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

My main experience is six years as an au pair with two families, one in Highland Park here in Chicago and one in San Francisco, caring for children from newborn up to sixteen. That covered everything: bottles and naps, meal prep, driving to school, doctor’s appointments, rehearsals and activities, plus homework and real conversations with the older ones.

Before that I was a summer camp counselor, working with ages from 8-12 for 6months total. That’s where I first got comfortable managing a whole group of kids at once, keeping everyone safe, and keeping the energy fun without letting it get chaotic. It’s a very different skill from one-on-one care and I’m glad I have both.

I also have a culinary background, so cooking for kids around allergies and picky phases is second nature.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Anything outside, honestly. Swimming, biking, the park, just being active with them. I love teaching kids something new and watching them get confident at it.

I also love cooking and baking with them. I have a culinary background, so letting them stand on a stool and actually help is one of my favorite things. They eat so much better when they made it themselves.

And I’m a designer, so we do a lot of art. Drawing, painting, big messy projects. With the older ones it turns into homework help and real conversations, which I love just as much.

Mostly I just follow what they’re into. If a kid is obsessed with something, we go all in on it.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Honestly? Trust. Everything else grows out of it.

The kids have to trust that I’m consistent, that I mean what I say, and that I’m going to show up the same way every single day. And the parents have to trust that when they’re at work, their child is safe, fed, happy, and genuinely cared for, not just supervised.

After six years with 3 families, I learned that the little things build that trust more than anything: knowing which cup is the right cup, remembering that a certain song helps at bedtime, noticing when someone’s off before they say anything. Kids feel cared for in the details.

And safety underneath all of it. That part is never negotiable.

The most important part about being a nanny...

There are honestly too many to pick just one. I taught my kids how to swim and how to ride their bikes. I was at their graduations, their rehearsals, all the moments that mattered to them.

I think what I love most is being the person in the room when something clicks for them. That first time they let go of the bike and realize they’re doing it by themselves. The look they give you right after, checking if you saw it. You always saw it.

Six years is long enough that you stop being the babysitter and start being part of their life. That’s my favorite part.
