My experience with special needs children...
Although I am not certified, I have worked with a few children with special needs in my classroom on the day today basis. How I treat the idividual child is no different from the love and care I give to every other child. However, I don't have expectations for the children I encounter with special needs to operate the same way as another child. So I would meet that child where they are at and give them help where they need it and allow them to freely express themselves the way they need to. In my classroom I would find an interest that they like and I will set out a little center for them specifically.
