After completing a Bachelor's degree in Adolescent (5th-12th grade) English Education at Pace University, I am excited to move onto a more personal and individualized child-care environment. Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

For three summers I worked at Harbor Hills Day Camp, where I first was a pre-k counselor, which consisted of working with 2-3 other counselors, looking after a group of 9-13 four-year-olds for 8 weeks, 5 days a week. We dressed campers before and after swim, got campers on time to activities, managed small fights and meltdowns, got them lunch and snacks, and packed their bags before they went home. The following summer, I was promoted to the role of “Showtime Specialist” after expressing interest in the position during my re-interview. This job included: Teaching multiple 30-minute music and dance (or “showtime”) classes each day for pre-K through second grade, Directing two musicals a summer, including titles such as High School Musical Junior and Moana Junior, with 40 campers from 3rd to 8th grade, and managed everything from props and costumes to choreography and casting while running rehearsals. Theatre and teaching have always been my two passions, so this job was a dream.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

A staple for me is taking kids to the park equipped with everything we need to have a fun-filled day. Of course, the playground is fun on its own, but to make the most of the fresh air, packing a bag full of necessities is a must. Other than full water bottles and plenty of snacks, I like to bring along a card game, some books we could read, and some paper and markers. Paper and markers could turn into hours of fun with a little creativity. I like to do anything from simple games like tic-tac-toe and dots and boxes, to more creative things like paper airplane races or design-your-own silly monsters. This bag of essentials can easily be moved inside to create endless fun on rainy or cold days without using a screen.

The most important part about being a nanny...

To me, the most important thing about being a nanny is forming a connection with the family. By knowing them on a personal level, we can not only be comfortable with each other, but also it will help me care for the children in the best way possible. One thing my experience in the classroom taught me is that children respect you and listen to you more when you take an interest in what they are interested in. I am ready to learn about your child's hobbies, favorite books and songs, and to generally bond with them as I get to know their personalities.

My experience with special needs children...

Through my program with the School of Education, I became a full-time student teacher/ teaching assistant during my senior spring semester. I worked under the 8th-grade English teacher in an inclusive co-taught classroom. In this position not only did I do the typical TA activities like making copies and assisting during class, I also provided one-on-one attention to students who needed extra help according to their IEPS. I also have a cousin who is non-verbal, so I am familiar with some communication devices.

The most important part about being a nanny...

My favorite moment was with the last family I was with: a 7-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy. They lived in New York City, and we spent a lot of time together doing a ton of fun stuff. But my favorite memories of them were always when I got to take them to the library and help them pick out books. I loved seeing how excited they were to pick out new titles, running over to me to show off what they picked. I always try to instill a love of reading in the kids I am working with.
