A little bit about me

I am originally from Seattle, have been an international humanitarian aid worker for many years and relocated to NYC 3 years ago.

I have a degree in Child Developmental Psychology, have worked summers as a camp counselor for all ages, nannied for years when I was younger, and am a very proud and dedicated Auntie to my niece and nephews (ages 3 months -10 yrs). I have an MA in Intercultural Youth and Family Development, and specialized my thesis on adolescent girls' leadership during the Peace Corps while studying all developmental ages.

In my global work I am specialized in child protection, gender equality, and gender-based violence. I love learning and understanding all cultures and individual needs and perspectives.

I am very interested in nature, and try to spend as much time as I can outside! I take kids out on walks, play, and am otherwise very active and educational with children.

I love to run and bike, love music and singing, and am overall a happy and positive person!

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have worked in child protection centers (one for boys, one for girls) to design activities, do case management to determine care plans with families including (where relevant) reintegration processes, and build life skills for those who reached adolescence and could not reintegrate to their original families.

I was also a camp counselor, due to my love for both caring for and educating children and youth - while having fun! In this capacity I served children aged 5-13, including both day-camp and live-in and overnight for older age groups.

Lastly - and though unpaid - I have looooovvvved being in charge of care for my niece and nephews over the past nearly 10 years for weeks at a time, and live-in cared for my niece for 2 years when she was a toddler. For all of my nieces and nephews I have cared for them from infancy and was a great additional lesson in caring for newborns :)

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I particularly enjoy being outdoors on walks, in parks, and other places that are safe and conducive for kids to learn about and experience nature and socialization (where appropriate).

I also love music, playing, and creativity, so adore dancing around and being silly with kids! I like coming up with activities that utilize whatever they have around them, stretching their understanding of how to use what they have/what is available for art or fun.

I also encourage some age-appropriate games and activities that encourage cognitive skills, such as puzzles, letter and number games, matching games, and board/card games.

The most important part about being a nanny...

First and foremost is safety and well-being, making sure they are in a protective environment. I believe being attentive to each individual child's needs (especially in multi-child homes) is critical, as not all children will respond the same way to the same approaches, and there may be dynamics between children with different needs or personalities. So listening and being patient to each child's interests and needs is essential.

That said, a good balance between discipline and structured routine, and flexibility and creativity is essential. I tend to feel most children appreciate understanding the "why" when boundaries and structure is necessary, so depending on the cognitive level of the child, this can be made clear so they develop critical thinking as early as possible.

Lastly it is important to be in tune/line with with the parenting plan that the long-term caregivers or parents have put in place, respecting their wishes and adhering (within safety parameters) to their goals

My experience with special needs children...

During my education in child psychology, I focused my practicum on children with behavioral issues, disabilities, or children who experienced trauma or abuse. I specifically mentored children (including home visits) who had autism, severe behavioral disorders due to trauma, and significant mobility constraints.

While I have not directly worked with hearing or visually impaired children, my humanitarian work has largely focused on providing support to those with similar profiles (across the globe and in different cultures) and can appreciate their unique needs.

The most important part about being a nanny...

My favorite was with a 7-year-old girl who was developing an interest in art and been introduced to Bob Ross's painting shows. So we decided to have a "Bob R-awesome" session and made happy tree paintings. When I saw her next, she had brought her creation to class to show her teacher and classmates, then put it on the refrigerator, telling everyone about Bob R-awesome :)

Crystal R. - Seeking Work in Brooklyn

Part-Time Child Care Provider Available in Brooklyn, NY: Crystal R.

As a long time children's entertainer and educator, I have a unique approach to babysitting. For one, I keep screen time to a minimum, as I believe play is a powerful force. It fuels a child's learning and overall development. Although I enjoy all of the amusement, having experience in secure facilities has taught me the value of discipline. This, coupled with my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Sarah Lawrence College allows me to use empathy to assist with behavioral issues. I am currently enrolled in a Master's program for Teaching Grades 1-6th and Special Education.

Alaya C. - Seeking Work in Brooklyn

Live-In Full-Time Nanny Available in Brooklyn, NY: Alaya C.

I'd describe my personality as hard working, attentive, and caring!

I like working with kids because I enjoy teaching and nurturing into young children who will soon become our future.

I'm looking for a job that is steady and long term.

I started working with kids when I was 11 years old when caring for my younger brother and sister. When I was 14 I worked for a math tutoring company that taught kids k-12th grade. When I was 16 I worked at the YMCA in the child play n' learn department.
I moved to NY in January of 2023 and have worked for four families since I've been here. I have experience with children as young as 2 months old up to 13 years old.

In my spare time, I'm often studying or catching up on homework online at Barry University.

One thing you should know about me is I love cooking and helping around the house as well.

I am also great in assisting with teaching toddlers how to walk, potty training, as well as introducing babies to solid foods!
