Having patience and understanding with the child. I think it’s very important to never forget what it was like to be a child yourself and try to remember how you felt and thought back then as well as understanding that you are dealing with someone brand new to the planet earth and they will want and need everything explained to them because they genuinely do not know.

I have had students who are on the autistic spectrum as a camp councilor, and my younger sister has Down’s syndrome. I have helped care for my sister since I was old enough to help around the house.
The most important part about being a nanny...
A moment that sticks out to me the most is the day I returned to working with a family after a year away. The child didn’t exactly remember who I was as he was quite young, but he warmed back up to me very quickly and hugged me while I carried him to be put down for a nap. That night I was telling my mom about how surprising it was that we were able to slide back into a routine so quickly and she said “he may not remember you specifically, but something in him remembers that you are safe.” Knowing that he feels safe with me is something I treasure
