More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

In college I was involved in this program called Book Buddies, where we would go into schools and spend one on one time helping kids that were under confident in their reading skills gain confidence in spelling, sounding out words, and reading aloud. I got involved in the program through a class I was taking on Children’s Literature, but continued to volunteer after the class was over because I felt like it was really helping the kids. I also volunteered for several years with campus ministry as a teachers aid in city schools helping give more focus to kids will learning disabilities.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

No matter the age of the child, I always love reading with them- it was one of my favorite things when I was little, and I think books are really important. I think doing arts and crafts projects are really fun (I used to build ginger bread houses with the two older girls I watched, and we would do coloring and bracelet making too), as well as playing games, and making food (cookies are a favorite of mine, but I do make healthier snacks too). For outdoor activities I like taking walks and looking for fairy houses, playing hide and go seek, and setting up obstacle courses. These are of course all modified activities depending on the child’s age and what they like to do, because their interests are more important than mine.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I think the most important part about being a nanny is a combination of being trustworthy for both the parents and the children, and listening to what both the parents and the children’s needs are. Parents might need someone who will stick to a schedule, make sure that the kids get their homework done, and brush their teeth before bed, but to a child that might not matter as much as whether or not the sitter has an imagination, and if they check both the closet and under the bed for monsters. Every relationship is different, so communication is key.
