A little bit about me

Hello! I do respite care for several families with children on the spectrum and have been part of their families for several years. I have an M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from UVA and an ABA certificate. I have cared for a 6-year-old for the past 3 years and am a good fit for a family seeking occasional care. I also provide weekend respite care for a 12-year-old and occasionally take him to the playground, the pool, Urban Air, horseback riding, or on weekends to give the family a break and de-escalate the tense home environment. I am certified in First Aid, Trauma, CPR, and AED for infants and children.
I am the father of a special needs child, and my ‘gift’ is that I am an active senior who wholeheartedly accepts these children for who they are, not where some think they should be. I am a retired Microsoft tech guy who got involved in the Autistic community. My CheckR background check is current and available to verify.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I mentor 4th- or 5th-graders to begin thinking about work or jobs that interest them and to help them investigate. The goal is to get them involved during middle school so they work towards a high school diploma, achieve an independent and happy life, and not end up in their parents' basement playing video games after high school. Too Many parents ignore this process for kids who have mental or emotional deficits, but that is exactly the reason to begin early. Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Horseback riding, Virginia fair, local airport, train to Washington, and a trip to a museum. Urban Air, YMCA Swimming pool for those with special needs. Children's Museum in Richmond. Dinner at a local Pizza place or Chick-fil-A. Shopping at Target for a T-shirt. Anything and everything to get them out of the house, away from screens, and learning how to interact with the real world and people. Here is the difference: I am not embarrassed by their divergent behavior. I have patience, I know they get wound up over noise, etc., but I am calm, and I am their advocate, guide, mentor, and safe place.

My experience with special needs children...

Tourette syndrome, Autism, Down syndrome, and CP. I can deal with personal hygiene. Sometimes it takes forever to potty train... but it will happen. I, too, am a father of a special needs child who is now a successful adult.
