I have worked both part-time and full-time as a nanny. My part-time experience consisted of helping mother with her 5 children, ranging in ages from newborn to 15. I would assist in meal preparation & clean up, make all lunches, do laundry, homework and other basic house keeping items. As a full-time nanny during the summer, I was responsible for three children, ages 10, 13, 16. Father had died two years prior, and Mother would return to CT for work for 4 days and 3 nights each week. During this time I was responsible for everything including food shopping, all meals, laundry, supervision, entertainment as well as keeping a careful eye everyday when we would go to the beach.

Growing up in a very large, tight-knit extended family, I have been around younger children for as long as I can remember. I believe that I was born with a passionate affinity for children - playing "Mommy" or "House" were among my favorite things to do as a child! At family gatherings, I commonly serve as the family's "entertainment" for all the younger children. I didn't begin babysitting alone until I turned 14, when I began watching two of my toddler cousins every day after school. As I got older, more family members began to seek my care and soon, I began working for friends of my family members. I have babysat infants, toddlers, and young children and I truly enjoy working with all ages. This past summer, I worked as a personal aide for a 4-year-old with autism. The job also involved working as an assistant at a small preschool that caters to children with special needs. During high school, I worked as a Red Cross Volunteer in the pediatric ward, playing with ailing children such as those with cancer and other terminal illnesses. I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every babysitting opportunity I have had and I firmly believe that the children are what have made my experiences so enjoyable.

Understand Nanny Responsibilities in Williamsburg, VA

Before beginning the search for a nanny, it’s important to understand what you’re looking for and if a nanny is the right choice for your child care needs. In hiring a nanny, first, you should think through what responsibilities you expect your nanny to handle. With that information, you can create a profile so that nannies can reach out to you. The boundaries for nannies duties vary from family to family. In general, a nanny is responsible for making sure your children’s needs are met, including things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active. When tasks go beyond child care, for example, housekeeping or meal preparation, it’s good practice to communicate these expectations with your nanny before hiring them. Along with the different duties that you ask for, experience and location can impact how much you should pay your nanny.

Williamsburg Nanny Interviews

Once you start connecting with prospective nannies, the next step is a nanny interview. To make things a bit easier, here’s a list of some nanny interview questions to consider asking:

  • Do you have experience being a nanny?
  • How do you handle tantrums? Can you share an experience disciplining children?
  • What sort of household tasks are you open to doing?
  • Are you open to a live in arrangement in Williamsburg? Do you have experience being a live in nanny?
  • Are you open to being a nanny in a nanny share?
  • Do you have any references?
  • Are you trained in First Aid or CPR in Williamsburg?
  • Do you have a driver’s license in VA? Do you own a car?
  • What salary are you seeking? Are you open to being paid through direct-deposit, pay stubs?
  • What are your expectations around over-time pay and vacation time?

During the hiring process, it’s essential to ask for references, and by asking their references questions you gain a better understanding of they will fit in your family. As you get closer to hiring a nanny, be sure to run a background check to ensure your kids are in good hands. When evaluating a prospective nanny, it’s essential to make sure you’re setting the foundation for a good relationship with your nanny. You can do this by being clear about your expectations around nanny responsibilities and compensation, and of course, by being friendly and welcoming! And of course, as you learn how to hire a nanny, Nanny Lane's nanny services are here to help you along the way.
