I am a junior at Virginia Tech double majoring in human development and public relations. I have had around 7 years of babysitting experience with children of all ages. A career path I am considering is teaching (per the human development major), and I am passionate about working with kids. I have had professional experience, working in the restaurant business as well as interning in the corporate world. I can provide references if needed. Due to being a student and Hokie fan, I have limited availability, but would love to help out when I can!

My name is Izzy. I graduated from Cape Henry Collegiate in 2016 and currently I am attending college at Virginia Tech. I have had many babysitting jobs and also worked at my church a lot with all the kids. I spent last year traveling and working in orphanages so I have worked with all ages! I have also had the opportunity to work with disabled children and I love pets. I have a car and am more than happy to run errands, take kids places, and do chores around the house. I love hanging out with kids and would love to nanny this year if possible!

I began baby sitting in high school for my neighbor's newborn daughter. I stayed with their family through 3 more children. My experience with their family is one that I will always cherish. I still see them when I can on breaks and I learned so much. It gave me the opportunity to get to know their habits and adhere to exactly what the parents wanted, for example when the oldest was a baby, we used sign language, that her mom taught me, to communicate because it was important to her mom that she learn at a very young age. I took this into consideration with all I did with her and we learned all about animals and even some french, that she loved to show off to her mom. This family also gave me the opportunity to experience multiple children very close in age and how to balance play time and dinner time and how to monitor them all. Since then, I have also worked part time with other families and each has taught me something new. For example, one family has two boys 6, and 4. They are very hyper and always wanting to climb on each other. This taught me how to think creatively and find fun, safe games to play around the house - like movie treasure hunt. I have also been a life guard for the past 4 years and hold CPR and Lifeguard certification and teach swim lessons to groups and individuals of all ages. I was also a theater major in high school and bring many fun games to the table - like improvisation games with different animals- that not only keep the kids entertained but also thinking. My mom is a teacher and seeing the passion she has for learning has greatly influenced my life, so I am always thinking of ways to keep the children learning.

I started babysitting at age 13 and have been doing it on and off ever since. I have two brothers, and one is 10 years younger than I am, so I spent a lot of time looking after him, as well.

Understand Nanny Responsibilities in Blacksburg, VA

Before beginning the search for a nanny, it’s important to understand what you’re looking for and if a nanny is the right choice for your child care needs. In hiring a nanny, first, you should think through what responsibilities you expect your nanny to handle. With that information, you can create a profile so that nannies can reach out to you. The boundaries for nannies duties vary from family to family. In general, a nanny is responsible for making sure your children’s needs are met, including things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active. When tasks go beyond child care, for example, housekeeping or meal preparation, it’s good practice to communicate these expectations with your nanny before hiring them. Along with the different duties that you ask for, experience and location can impact how much you should pay your nanny.

Blacksburg Nanny Interviews

Once you start connecting with prospective nannies, the next step is a nanny interview. To make things a bit easier, here’s a list of some nanny interview questions to consider asking:

  • Do you have experience being a nanny?
  • How do you handle tantrums? Can you share an experience disciplining children?
  • What sort of household tasks are you open to doing?
  • Are you open to a live in arrangement in Blacksburg? Do you have experience being a live in nanny?
  • Are you open to being a nanny in a nanny share?
  • Do you have any references?
  • Are you trained in First Aid or CPR in Blacksburg?
  • Do you have a driver’s license in VA? Do you own a car?
  • What salary are you seeking? Are you open to being paid through direct-deposit, pay stubs?
  • What are your expectations around over-time pay and vacation time?

During the hiring process, it’s essential to ask for references, and by asking their references questions you gain a better understanding of they will fit in your family. As you get closer to hiring a nanny, be sure to run a background check to ensure your kids are in good hands. When evaluating a prospective nanny, it’s essential to make sure you’re setting the foundation for a good relationship with your nanny. You can do this by being clear about your expectations around nanny responsibilities and compensation, and of course, by being friendly and welcoming! And of course, as you learn how to hire a nanny, Nanny Lane's nanny services are here to help you along the way.
