To me, getting to know the individual child and their needs is essential, especially when taking care of multiple children. Encouraging children to communicate their needs respectfully and developing their sense of self management is a form of growth I love to see.
My experience with special needs children...
I used to nanny for a family with four children, the eldest of which had autism that manifested in frequent outbursts and sensory overwhelm. I took care of this family since there were only two children up until I left for undergrad, which was about two and a half years.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Every nanny position I have held has had its own ups and downs, but children are always sweet and silly. My favorite moment as a nanny was when I took my kids to ball pit and they stuffed their clothes as full as they could with the colorful balls then came hobbling as fast as they could to show me. It made me laugh very hard. But I also enjoy the small moments where my kids have burst into song or spilled a bunch of water and all I could do was laugh.
