I love getting active and encouraging more activities than just video games or TV! Arts and crafts are one of my favorites, as well as board/card games, reading, talking, and playing nicely outside!

Making a real bond with the kids you are working with! Not only do they respect authority figures more when they are also treated with respect, but kids also learn a lot about managing emotions and how to be fair and empathetic members of society when they are validated for who they are. It is so important to genuinely get to know children.

I volunteered with children regularly through a program called Big Buddy, which paired high school students with children K-5 who academically or socially struggle, or have a less than fortunate home life. While I worked in this program, one of my favorite things was to just talk to the kids! They are very smart and have such big dreams. I've learned a lot from the children I have worked with, and that is something that I wouldn't get anywhere else.
