A little bit about me

My first child care position was in 1986, for the 3 sons of a physician, my next door neighbor. I stayed quite busy, scheduled for the weekend care of their boys. I spent the summer of 1989, in West Africa. I interacted with the tribal children, on a daily basis. I went on to a Live-in position, in Fairfax, VA. After getting married, I began caring for 4-5 children, in my home. My children graduated, moved onto college, and I became a full-time Nanny, caring for children in their homes. I was the, "Mary Poppins of Michiana". I'm a huge fan of singing, acting, dancing, reading, and having fun, fun, fun with the children; educating them as well. I volunteered with Children's Community Theatre, for years. One of my ideas, for entertaining children, during long car drives , was published in Family Fun Magazine, in 2010. More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I volunteered in classrooms of 20-30 children, Kindergarten through Sixth Grade, for many, many years.
I also had a home daycare, while my children were young.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I am very active. I enjoy outdoor activities with children the most; playing freeze-tag, soccer, hide and seek, swimming, etc.

My experience with special needs children...

I cared for a 17 year old young lady with Level 3 Autism. Her "mental age" was of a 3-5 year old (her mother explained during the interview). The young lady was non-verbal but communicated in other ways. We bonded, immediately. She turned 18 and moved into a "Neighborhood of homes for other adults with Autism", that her parents had taken part in building for her. I miss her very much.

The most important part about being a nanny...

One of my regular, part-time, as needed, weekend Nanny positions, was for "Z", a 5-year-old girl. Her parents were principal players, in 2 symphony orchestras. I'd been caring for her, for approximately 4 1/2 years , when this extremely memorable "event" took place. She always waited for me, in her large picture window. I could see people moving around, behind her, when I pulled up to the curb. (I was not aware that her parents were hosting a "pre-show cocktails and hors d'oeuvres" get-together.)
She ran out to greet me, as she always did. This time, however, she dragged me into the foyer, by my left hand, shaking with giddiness! Music filled the house. "Z" shouted, "PLEASE! SHH! This is important! LOOK!" When it was silent, & she had everyone's attention, she exclaimed, "This is my Nanny, Miss Heather! She is the BEST Nanny in the WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD!" She began clapping & everyone followed suit! My eyes filled with tears. I will remember that, for the rest of my life. 🤗
