I feel like maybe there are 2 equally important things, although I’m sure that’s cheating. Patience and consistency. If you’re not patient, everyone is going to be miserable. If you’re not consistent, the kiddos will not learn to take you seriously and learn that you will follow mom/dad/grandparents rules.

The most important part about being a nanny...
A kiddo and I were doing a paint color experiment. The kiddo was so excited to see what each color combination would make. It was exciting to hear what their hypothesis of what yellow and red would make. (Though not always accurately guessing orange). And when they mixed the colors they would get excited like magic had happened in front of their eyes. I feel as if the simplest things can be so exciting when doing them with children.
