The most important part about being a nanny...
Nannying is a tough job. Your job is built on the relationship you build with each child, but every child is different. The most important part about being a nanny is creating firm boundaries and building trust. Your most important job is to nurture and care for the child, but their safety is number one.
My experience with special needs children...
I have worked directly with children with autism, both verbal and nonverbal. I have taught children with hearing and vision disabilities. I was lead teacher for our partnership with the LEAP program at my childcare facility. I essentially worked as a buffer for parents and outside resources.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I bought Eric Carle’s A House for Hermit Crab, and brought some shells I collected years ago to a family I lived with for a few years. It was summer, and the kids had recently got hermit crabs while in Hawaii. They were so excited to read about this hermit crab’s hunt for a new shell. After reading the book we decorated our shells to make a beautiful new home for our imaginary hermit crabs. It was a hit, and I remember the kids would beg for another book project everyday. They even named their hermit crabs after me! I loved that I was able to demonstrate my love for reading, how exciting art can be, and that the kids still remember that activity to this day.
