Being kind and supportive and treating children like they are people. One of the best things I think that my mom did for me as a child was explain things to me and not say things like, “because I said so.” I always understood why rules existed and why they were important and it made me feel respected and as though my feelings and opinions mattered.

I worked a lot with the local autism society and helped out a lot with my friend’s sister who has quadriplegia.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I was working teaching English to a 5 year old girl. We had worked for weeks on learning numbers and I came in one day and she excitedly exclaimed, “Teacher! I practiced sooo hard!” Then she recited the numbers not only 1-10 but 1-20. She was so proud of herself and it was so rewarding to see the pride and accomplishment on her face.
