I’ve been a nanny for most of my working life, and have most steadily worked as a nanny or caregiver for the last 6 years. I have worked with children with autism and other learning difficulties, and children from 2 months to 13 years. I’ve also been a group counselor for young teens, and have 6 siblings.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love taking kids to explore outside, learn about nature and the things we see and think in a very hands on learning way. When indoors we love to craft, play games, practice reading, baking, cooking and truly anything a child feels up to tackling with support.
The most important part about being a nanny...
What matters the most to me while caring for children is that they feel loved, protected and if possible, understood. I like to resolve conflict with understanding and compassion, and it’s important to me that I meet them where they’re developmentally at. I was homeschooled myself and I think the benefits of exploration and hands on learning was very impactful for me; so I love to share that with the kiddos I watch if it’s age appropriate.
My experience with special needs children...
I have experience caring for children with Down syndrome, autism and other mental special needs. I have most recently cared for an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s dementia.
The most important part about being a nanny...
A few summers ago while I was caring for kiddos 8, 10 (SN) and 12, we had a huge water fight outside and played this pretend captured princess situation. Afterwards the kids were chilly so we went inside and cuddled with hot cocoa. It was so sweet and I adored those children so much.
