I love children. I have siblings, cousins, nieces/nephews and friend's children which I took care of. I was a stay-at-home Mom until my daughter was school-age. Recently I was caregiver to 3yo twin girls who were disabled ASL. and it was truly the best job I ever had. Everyday I learned and everyday they taught me something. Am actually looking into a degree or certificate program for caring for disabled children. Their parents and Therapists said they were growing/thriving, but it was me who was growing.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I think it is incredibly important to not just be a babysitter. I so often see caregivers prop up children in front of tv, or tablet or PS5 and I think it is ok every so often but it is more fulfilling to do stuff. My best days are spent reading books [doing the voices], drawing, painting, running, splashing, making up stories, laughing. The first few years of my daughter's life I spent on the floor right along with her. I wanted to make sure she saw, felt, experienced everything she could from her vantage point. I worked with 2 3year old twins and I engaged them both and separately. Catering to each of their interests....I found out which one loves splashing, which one loves to run, which one likes to organize and sort. I always found ways to encourage their growth. I loved it

My experience with special needs children...

My last job was caring for 3year old ASL twin girls. It was my best job Ever. I would say I taught each of them so much - at their own pace - but the person really learning the most was me. To see their faces light up or laugh and smile and run when just a few days or weeks ago they did not was an incredible experience.

The most important part about being a nanny...

[1]My first full evening with twin girls who were Autistic I thought ok its just 2 little girls no problem. They tackled me with their strong little baby bodies and I was laid flat on my back like a struggling turtle! [2]One of my last experiences I brought their unicorn leash with me. We were going on a nature walk. I dislike the leashes but brought it with me J.I.C. Both had a major meltdown in the ice cream parlor! I put the leash on them and they twirled and twirled until they were a little human baby knot. Everyone was staring, they were screaming and I just started to speak to them in soothing tone until they calmed down. I always carry lavender essential oil with me and so I hummed while untangling.They somehow knotted me in the leash as well. Finally all 3 of us was unknotted. And we left....But not before we got a free spoonful of yogurt. I think management wished we never came back. But I came back a second later......I forgot the red spoons they love to play with!
