My experience with special needs children...
My first job was as a library assistant and my favorite part of the day was getting to work with this 9 year old boy who was diagnosed as dyslexic. His mom has asked me if I could work on helping him improve his reading. At first he didn’t really enjoy it, it saw it as a chore.
In order to get him to engage more told him once we finish reading a few pages of the books his mom wants him to read, then he could pick out any book he wants to read for a bit. I also made him some puzzle and games for him to enjoy rather than reading all the time. The boy also had a little brother that would come with him sometimes so I would promise them a game of uno (their favorite game), after we finished reading the assigned pages for the day. Each time a milestone was met, I brought him and his little brother a candy that they liked (with the permission of the parents).
Seeing the progress he was making and how much more confident he was becoming with reading really touched my heart.
