Starting at a young age was a blessing though because it showed me how much I love caring for children, and at 16 I started for family/ family friends and never turned back. My experience with special needs children...

My little brother has Autism, he’s always had his ups and downs as anyone. I’ve cared for him since I was around 8 years old. So keeping sensory meltdowns at bay is my specialty. Hyper fixations are my friend, and yes I will spend all day talking about dinosaurs, or anything else that fills those special minds! I never set limits, kids are kids, no matter the mental state. My brother was held back a lot by others based on what people assumed of his intelligence, but he isn’t stupid. His brain is just wired differently, and that’s what makes him human, and my little brother. Wouldn’t trade him for the world.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I was watching two young boys and they both asked to go to the park before nap time, I was reluctant because I knew by the time we were ready they would be ready to sleep. They were persistent though and we had an hour so I agreed. I got them changed and grabbed the little one. The other was basically running circles around me so I had hope. Unfortunately, before we even made it out the door, the little one I was carrying was fast asleep in my arms, snug as a bug in a rug if you will. So, I give up and head back to lay the little one down for a nap, and to my sarcastic surprise what do I see? The other child in his bed fast asleep. I try laying the little one down but he was fussy, so I ended up holding him for a good portion of his nap, taking care of the household while I did. In the long run, we definitely weren’t late on naptime.
