A little bit about me

Hi! I’m Makayla Nietzel — a Paralympic athlete, published author, and small business owner with a love for creativity, teaching, and helping others grow. I competed in the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo and am finishing my Bachelor’s degree in English. I wrote and self-published my first novel, Beneath the Weeping Willow, and also run my own art business where I handle everything from design to sales. I’ve always been passionate about mentoring kids through swimming and fitness, and as someone who’s visually impaired, I’ve learned that determination and positivity can turn any challenge into an opportunity. I’m looking for a long term nanny job, and I’m very very excited to get started! I’m also flexible when it comes to pay!

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have extensive experience mentoring and caring for children through a variety of roles. As a swim instructor at the YMCA and a coach for the McHenry Marlins, I taught children and teens of all abilities, focusing on skill development, safety, and confidence. I also volunteered at the Alive Center in Naperville, assisting with after-school programs and mentoring students. Over eight years on my local club swim team, I supported younger teammates as a mentor, and I have coached children and young adults, including swimmers with disabilities, through camps and training programs. Additionally, I completed 50 hours of field experience at St. Charles East High School, assisting with classroom instruction and student engagement for my Education major. I was an Education and English double major before deciding to solely focus on finishing my English bachelors degree.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I enjoy engaging children in creative and educational activities, with a special focus on arts and crafts projects that encourage self-expression and imagination. I also love leading reading and storytelling sessions, interactive learning exercises, outdoor play, and team-building games that help children build confidence, cooperation, and problem-solving skills. My goal is to create a fun, supportive environment where children can explore their creativity, learn new skills, and enjoy themselves while growing.

The most important part about being a nanny...

The most important part of being a nanny is making sure kids feel safe, happy, and supported. It’s not just about watching them—it’s about being someone they can look up to, learn from, and have fun with. I love helping kids grow, explore, and try new things while knowing they’re cared for and encouraged along the way.

My experience with special needs children...

I have meaningful experience working with children with special needs, including my role as a paraprofessional at an autism school. In this position, I supported students with diverse learning and behavioral needs, assisting with classroom activities, individualized learning plans, and social-emotional development. I have also coached swimmers with disabilities through camps and training programs, helping them build confidence, skills, and independence in a supportive environment. These experiences have strengthened my patience, adaptability, and ability to create inclusive, positive spaces where all children feel supported, encouraged, and empowered to reach their full potential.
