I volunteered at my local daycare in highschool. There were 4 class rooms starting with infants all the way up to 5 and 6 year olds. I volunteered there until I was old enough to join the workforce.
other than the daycare, one of my closest friends is a nanny and has been for a little over a year. she nanny’s 5 kids and some of the days they go out i tag along and help out. as well as just going over there to hang out sometimes.

My experience with special needs children...
in middle school as a part of our “leadership school” we had optional classes where you would get to do something totally different that you were interested in. my group would go down to the classroom with the lower functioning children and we would hang out for an hour, show them new things and tell them about us! in that class my buddy had autism and adhd. but we all worked together and i assisted many kids with down syndrome as well.
at the daycare i volunteered at, it was mostly autism. but most of the kids that had autism were non verbal which definitely stumped me at first but was so intriguing figuring out ways for us to communicate with each other
