More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I worked with 4 children aged 6-7, and occasionally their younger siblings while school was out during quarantine. I took them on “field trips”, to parks nearby, throughout their school day. This was to break up the reading and math lessons they were assigned to do through iPad school. As first graders, this was sort of their first introduction to school and “homework” in general. It was a challenge to have them understand the importance of their assignments, and to create fun incentives to complete them. As their schedules were so changed due to the pandemic, I frequently had to be a patient, calm energy when they got upset or angry at schoolwork, or their pod “classmates”.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Since I do a lot of sketching and sewing in my free time, I love to share this with kids. I think that drawing is such a great tool for imagination and somehow reinforces the idea that they can create anything they can think of. I’ve found that even the most energetic children can find calm in creating crazy pictures.
I also think being active and busy is key, so I’ll play music that they enjoy, and encourage outside play.
When possible, I like to let the kid’s thought process lead their day. So if they ask a question, I like to investigate further with them—I’ll look up pictures and websites we can learn from.

My experience with special needs children...
Two of the children I’ve worked for had emotional/behavioral concerns, including anger management, intense sensitivity, and ADHD. I do find that being calm and listening is THE most important tool, but sometimes it takes a minute or two to get to the point where they’re willing to have you listen. Even when their complaint/outburst seems/is completely irrational, they always do have a reason (justified or not). Learning to see from their perspective to hear, and then talk about my perspective to teach, has been my go-to method.
Right now, I’m working with a high school student who struggles with a few mental health issues and ADHD as well. It is always a process to first learn the child’a habits and personality as well as possible, as even common mental health concerns affect each person differently.
