I have been a very hands on auntie for my niece and nephews for the past eleven years and my step sisters are the ones who suggested I start caring locally when I recently moved. I’ve been a paid sitter off and on for over 30 years.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
All kinds of arts and crafts, the list is extensive: watercolor painting, polymer clay sculpture, card making, slime making and Ukrainian egg dying. I enjoy all kinds of games including chess. Walks around the park, collecting leaves, not afraid to get dirty. Reading, storytelling, baking cookies. Whatever is approved, weather appropriate and the kiddos are interested in.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Being able to be silly for the kids and responsible for the parents. I have no problem doing the ridiculous dances and creative voices at story time but also always showing up 15min early, never late, listening to house rules and what is expected of me.
My experience with special needs children...
Over the past 11yrs I have been a very hands on auntie to some of the most spectacular human beings who’ve taught me so much. I have one nephew who is ADHD, one nephew who has social anxiety issues, another nephew who’s high functioning neurodivergent/autistic and my niece is developmentally disabled. I have a greater level of patience and empathy and I feel truly blessed to have developed such a strong relationship with them all in their unique ways.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I have to say the first time my autistic nephew initiated a hug when I came to sit. Still makes me choke up a little thinking about how nice to see that HE was as happy to see me as I was to see him. Followed by a silly moment with a repeat sit. I sat with a girl, age 8/9, I tried to keep her engaged and in eyesight as cooked dinner so I did my,”let’s tell a story together” trick. I started a story with the sentence,” There was a cat named Sue, and she was bright blue. All the other cats were orange and black and brown but Sue was special…” then I asked her for the next sentence. We went back and forth like that until the spaghetti was done. Well I got a call back 2-3 weeks later and when I showed up her mum said as she opened the door,” She’s all excited so be prepared” and sure enough she came running around the corner with a big smile and a piece of paper in her hand…and she couldn’t wait to show me her drawing of a blue cat. That one got me!
