My favorite activities to facilitate are those that stimulate both the mind and body.
With toddlers, I enjoy focusing on sensory activities that encourage dialogue and skill development. This might include things like finger painting, which promotes hand-eye coordination and muscle control while also providing tactile input to identify and discuss (e.g., “The paint feels cold on our hands. It’s wet. We’ll wash our hands when the paint gets sticky, before it dries.”). This kind of shared-experience dialogue is fundamental for language comprehension and speech development. With preschool and early school-aged children, I find dancing, singing, playing pretend, and simply getting energy out to be especially rewarding. A lot of change, learning, and discovery happens at this age; it’s great to let their brains rest and their bodies move!
