While I have not been a Nanny, I have worked with the children at my center. I remember sitting down with one of my 3-year-olds and writing out his name. Not only could he tell me what it said, but he told me what each letter was, and wrote it out for me (as best he could). Just seeing the growth and having him understand what I was asking was a great feeling.
