My experience with special needs children...
Some experiences I have with kids with autism is providing one on one supervision and support. Helped follow structured daily routines, Assisted with communication using simple, clear instructions. Supported sensory needs (quiet spaces, fidget toys, calming techniques) Helped practiced patience during meltdowns or overstimulation. Used positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior and worked closely with parents to follow specific care plans.
Some skills I have would be Very patient and calm under pressure, strong understanding of routine and consistency. Good at reading body language and nonverbal cues, gentle redirection instead of punishment. Clear and simple communication style, ability to create a safe, low-stress environment. Emotionally supportive and reassuring empathetic and understanding. Observant - notice triggers or mood changes quickly, creative with sensory-friendly activities and respectful of each child’s individual needs.

The most important part about being a nanny...
One time I was babysitting and the kid insisted we play restaurant. I was the customer and they were the chef… but the menu only had invisible food. I had to order an ‘air burger’ with a side of ‘nothing fries.’ They even charged me 20 pretend dollars and got mad when I didn’t tip enough. Later I found out they actually wrote me a receipt and put it in my pocket before I left. Their mom texted me later asking why I went home with a paper that said ‘worst customer ever — 2 stars.’”
And it’s this other time I was babysitting and the kids decided we were playing ‘family.’ They made me the baby… the baby. I got put to bed at 7:30, tucked in, read a story, and told to stop talking because ‘babies don’t have phones.’ When I tried to get up they said I was grounded and had to take a nap. I just accepted my fate and laid there while they cleaned their room around me. Honestly, it was the most peaceful babysitting shift I’ve ever had.”
