A little bit about me

Hi there! My name is Ruby Moon, I’m 25 and Canadian/British currently loving my little life in NYC🍎 I graduated university in 2022 (Sociology & Communications), I speak French and am an aspiring teacher/educator. My favourite thing about kids is when they get quiet but you can tell they’re thinking about something and then come out with the most out-of-pocket question/1-liner🤭 You’ll likely spot me on a bike, giggling with friends, eating at Forma Pasta or, as of recently, once a month @ Gottscheer Hall for their Honky Tonk line dancing event. I grew up surrounded by music (records, CDs, playing trumpet + guitar, and going to concerts) and with a loud, storytelling family of brothers + extended family.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I started babysitting as soon as I was old enough to take the subway by myself (age 11 or so) and grew up with 2 younger brothers 6 & 9 years younger than me. I was the neighbourhood sitter responsible for homework/tutoring, getting kiddos to & from extracurriculars, and entertaining them on school breaks / evenings before bed. Was often hired for New Year’s eve, Halloween, birthday parties etc with hoards of kids to entertain!

In addition, I was a sleep away camp counsellor for 6 summers (and a fall season during my gap year) where I was responsible for 8 kids aged 6-16 in a cabin leading them through outdoor education programs, big group activities and multi-day canoe trips. At this time I was a certified lifeguard + swim instructor and had my First Aid + CPR.

Have various other experiences volunteering, teaching swim lessons, and working with children with special needs/extra support.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I’ll meet a kid wherever they’re at doing whatever activity they find engaging. I have a ton of back pocket games from my summer camp days but also grew up in a big city (Toronto) and therefore know how to make the most of museums, parks, and other free/accessible events in the city.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I probably sound like a broken record but meeting the kids where they’re at! We had a saying at my camp: “FTK” aka “For The Kids”; I tried to stay grounded in the fact that as long as the kids are happy, healthy and comfortable, we’re doing something right.

My experience with special needs children...

2 major experiences:
1) While living in Cambridge, UK on my gap year for a year, I nannied for a family with 3 boys under 12 all on the autism spectrum. I would take 1 of them in particular on long walks/swims essentially to tucker him out and give the other 2 boys a breather.

2) At the summer camp I worked at we had a program dedicated to kids who needed extra support whether it be physical, mental or other disabilities. Over my 6 summers I worked with & supported a number of campers + volunteers ranging from age 10-25 leading them through traditional camp programs and meeting them where they were at (ie colouring, stickers, singing, swimming, hanging out on the dock, helping in the kitchen, etc).

The most important part about being a nanny...

One of my favourites was when I nannied for a few months of early Covid (April - June 2020) and with the 2 boys (aged 6 & 4), we set up a lemonade stand for their street. We ended up doing it every Friday for 5 or 6 weeks because they got such a kick out of it and loved being part of the kitchen process + making signs and saying hi to their neighbours.
