I worked for a wonderful family in Austria who have two little girls, Catie and Caroline. Catie was almost two and Caroline was 4 months when I first worked for the family. Originally the job was only for one month to give Catie a chance to spend time around a native English speaker and to give mum a month at work. But I have since been back five times to work for them and three just to visit and the whole family have visited me in Scotland too. In the summer I took the kids strawberry picking, swimming in the lake, out on bicycle rides, and on trips into the city. In the winter we tried sledding, ski-ing, and building snowbears! In Scotland I looked after a 4 year old and a newborn for a friend of mine to give her some time to organise the house or just chill out! 4-year-old Leah asked me questions that sometimes challenge my intelligence! She is very bright and nearly always smiling. When I was looking after only her we would often go for a hot chocolate as a special treat and read the latest Julia Donaldson or Dr Suess book. Her newborn sister obviously spent most of her time eating and sleeping but she was generally a very contented baby and I enjoyed the opportunity to watch her grow. In my part-time au pair position I looked after 4 year old Tristram, 2.5 y/o Tara and 1 y/o Elliot. They live on a working farm so we spent much of our time outdoors picking the fruit, watching the tractors, or playing in the mud! I am currently an au pair for a family with two children, a 6.5 year-old boy and a 2 year-old girl, in Alaska, USA. I started at the end of July 2006 and intend to stay with them until the end of July 2007. My main responsibilities are getting Drake ready for school, looking after Phoebe while he is at school, collecting Drake from school, and looking after both of them some evenings/weekends and during school holidays. The family has a flexible schedule so I work different hours each day/week. Phoebe and I attend a lot of community based activites for toddlers including storytime at the local library, toddler time at the local sports hall, and swimming at the local pool. Phoebe and I also spend some time outside each day (unless the temperature is below minus 20F). The family have one dog and I am responsible for feeding her/walking her occasionally. I don't do housework for the family but I load/unload the dishwasher and help keep the children's play areas tidy. I've also worked as an outdoor education instructor, classroom aid, playworker on a childrens hospital ward, and a childrens worker for a charity working with children with special needs.

A nanny share is when one nanny cares for children from two different families. Each family saves significantly on child care expenses, while the nanny enjoys higher pay than the typical full-time position.

She was an amazing caretaker to my kids. She was always punctual, responsible, and reliable. She played with the children and did not play on her phone or computer during her hours worked! She was an amazing babysitter and we miss her tremendously down in Alabama:-). - Abby

Understand Babysitter Responsibilities in Kenai, AK

Before beginning the search for a babysitter, it’s important to understand what you’re looking for and if a babysitter is the right choice for your child care needs. There are lots of benefits to hiring a babysitter such as getting the flexibility of having some more time for yourself or with your partner. When hiring a babysitter, first, you should explore the differences between a nanny and a babysitter. If you’re looking for occasional child care, babysitters are the right choice for you, but if you’re looking for more frequent care, a nanny may be better for your needs.

From there, you can think about what you expect your babysitter to handle so that you can create a profile for nannies to reach out to you. The boundaries for babysitters’ duties can vary from family to family. However, in general, a babysitter is responsible for making sure your kids’ needs are met, including things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active. When tasks go beyond child care, for example to housekeeping, laundry, or meal preparation, it’s good practice to communicate these expectations with your babysitter before hiring them. Along with the different duties that you ask for, experience and location in Kenai can impact how much you pay your babysitter.

Kenai Babysitter Interviews

Once you start connecting with prospective babysitters, the next step is to conduct an interview. To make things a bit easier, here’s a list of some babysitter interview questions to consider asking:

  • Do you have experience being a babysitter?
  • What sort of household tasks are you open and comfortable doing?
  • Do you have any references?
  • Are you trained in First Aid or CPR in Alaska?
  • Do you have a Alaska driver’s license? Do you own a car?
  • How do you handle tantrums? Can you share an experience disciplining children?

During the hiring process, it’s essential to ask for references and by asking their references questions you gain a better understanding of they will fit in your family. As you get closer to hiring a nanny, be sure to run a background check to ensure your kids are in good hands. When evaluating a babysitter that you’re considering hiring, make sure you’re setting the foundation for a good relationship with your babysitter. You can do this by being clear about your expectations around babysitter responsibilities and compensation, and of course, by being friendly and welcoming!

And of course, as you learn how to hire a babysitter, Nanny Lane's nanny services are here to help you along the way.
