A little bit about me…

I worked as a Girl Scout camp counselor and lifeguard for 2 years working with ages 6-18. There I taught campers outdoor skills (like building a fire and cooking over it, building shelter, etc.), boating, archery, songs, and games. Then I spent the summer of 2010 babysitting 2 children, a girl age 8 and a boy age 11, during the week, while their parents worked. I have also served as a swimming lessons instructor both private and public for 3 summers. In the summer of 2014, I was also asked to fill in for several weeks as the substitute manager for the public swimming lessons, including opening and closing of lessons for over 100 students each morning. In September of 2014, I moved in with my brother to finish up my class requirements at a University near his house and to help to care for my 6 month old nephew. Though my classes have ended, I have continued to help care for the little guy, while pursuing new adventures. In addition to these experiences, I have babysat various ages for many families growing up.

A little bit about me…

I've been babysitting since I was a young teenager. When my sister had children, I cared for them during the day until my nephew was 4 and my niece was 2. I also worked for a family during the summer taking care of a boy and girl ages 5 and 7. I recently worked at a Child Development Center working with 4-5 year olds. I've had up to 12 at a time in my classroom. I have some pre-school teaching experience. I feel like child care is a gift that I've been given and I'm very confident in my abilities. I love and respect children. I feel I learn as much from them as they learn from me. I am currently working at an elementary school.

Understand Nanny Responsibilities in Independence, KS

Before beginning the search for a nanny, it’s important to understand what you’re looking for and if a nanny is the right choice for your child care needs. In hiring a nanny, first, you should think through what responsibilities you expect your nanny to handle. With that information, you can create a profile so that nannies can reach out to you. The boundaries for nannies duties vary from family to family. In general, a nanny is responsible for making sure your children’s needs are met, including things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active. When tasks go beyond child care, for example, housekeeping or meal preparation, it’s good practice to communicate these expectations with your nanny before hiring them. Along with the different duties that you ask for, experience and location can impact how much you should pay your nanny.

Independence Nanny Interviews

Once you start connecting with prospective nannies, the next step is a nanny interview. To make things a bit easier, here’s a list of some nanny interview questions to consider asking:

  • Do you have experience being a nanny?
  • How do you handle tantrums? Can you share an experience disciplining children?
  • What sort of household tasks are you open to doing?
  • Are you open to a live in arrangement in Independence? Do you have experience being a live in nanny?
  • Are you open to being a nanny in a nanny share?
  • Do you have any references?
  • Are you trained in First Aid or CPR in Independence?
  • Do you have a driver’s license in KS? Do you own a car?
  • What salary are you seeking? Are you open to being paid through direct-deposit, pay stubs?
  • What are your expectations around over-time pay and vacation time?

During the hiring process, it’s essential to ask for references, and by asking their references questions you gain a better understanding of they will fit in your family. As you get closer to hiring a nanny, be sure to run a background check to ensure your kids are in good hands. When evaluating a prospective nanny, it’s essential to make sure you’re setting the foundation for a good relationship with your nanny. You can do this by being clear about your expectations around nanny responsibilities and compensation, and of course, by being friendly and welcoming! And of course, as you learn how to hire a nanny, Nanny Lane's nanny services are here to help you along the way.

Daycare vs. Hiring a Nanny

Choosing between putting your child in daycare and hiring a nanny can be a tough decision. While nannies are often more expensive, they provide individualized attention and flexibility. Daycares, on the other hand, prioritize socialization. Our Nanny vs Daycare guide can help you determine what's best for your family.
