I have been working with children since I was about 10 years old on my own. However, I have also been surrounded by children my entire life. My mom would babysit on the regular, and I would help assist her. My babysitting experience began when I was around 10. I started out by watching our neighbor's kids. They had 3 children. When I was 10, they were aged 7, 5, and 3. Then when I got older, I started to watch close family friend's children. One of which had a young daughter. I watched her when she was about 3 or 4 until about 7. I also babysat for family. One aunt of mine has 3 children. One of her oldest boys is in 5th grade, the middle son is in kindergarten, and her daughter is 4. I began watching them when they were all young.
After high school, I began to nanny for a family of 3. I watched mainly the two older boys who were 10 and 12 at the time. Their daughter, who was 5, went to day care most of the time, but I did have her some days. I took them to a number of summer camps and activities. We went to the pool a lot, and also attended free movies at the movie theaters. We even went bowling. We spent a lot of time reading books and going to the library. Some days though were spent indoors playing games and watching movies.
After that experience, I really wanted to work with younger children because they are a little bit more mobile. This describes my personality. My aunt needed a nanny for my cousin. She was 9 at the time. We spent a lot of time going to soccer practices, going to the pool, going shopping, playing games, hanging out outdoors playing sports, and doing a lot of other various activities. She also practiced math problems, had to read a certain amount of minutes per day, and had chores to complete.
Recently, I have watched a close family friend's newborn. He is now 7 months. A lot of responsibility comes with watching newborns and infants, but I think it is amazing to watch them grown and develop!
