I have been a nanny for Single Fathers, two working parents, one working parents and taken care of newborns up to 19 years of age. I enjoy working with children and have been either part of the family or just a professional employee in other settings. I have always lived in and enjoy my field. I actively babysit for the pure enjoyment of it and am a career nanny.

I have been babysitting for about 5 years now. (Age 13-18). I have experience with children ages 4-13. I have had responsibilities such as driving children to school and activities, weekend care, after school care and late night care. I have worked at numerous camps as a coach/trainer and also a camp councilor. I have coached two teams (ages 4 and 13) and a 6th-7th grade team. I also was a youth group leader at my church and an active member in youth programs throughout my parish.

I have worked with children of all ages, mostly newborns, infants, and toddlers, which are my favorite ages. I love to watch them grow and progress with all their changes.

Throughout the past seven years I have been babysitting for various families. I love children and have one year left in college where I will receive a Batchelor in Science in Child and Family Studies from the State University of New York College at Oneonta. I babysat throughout my years in high school and occasionally in college. One of my classes consisted of being in a day care for about three hours a week where I interacted with many children and helped them through their developmental processes. Children always put a smile on my face and there is nothing more than the reward of helping and playing with children.

My first job working with children I would have to say was in High School. I worked at a summer camp that works alongside children to adults with special needs. I was paid and worked there with a few friends. It was absolutely a difficult job, especially at 15 years old, but I can not say this enough that it really was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I still keep in touch with many of the children who are grown now. It taught me not to take anything for granted, and it showed me that nobody is really that different and that people with disabilities really shouldn't be treated any differently. I have also helped babysit the occassional children throughout Junior High and High School. One family was a 6 year old child who couldn't have been more happy and easy to take care of. I know how lucky I was. In my senior year of High School I tutored a Freshman English class that I had previously taken myself. I worked alongside the teacher helping with lesson plans, helping with homework in class, and teaching things myself. That was in 2003. I always have said if I wasn't working toward a doctorate in business I would have been a teacher. There are so many jobs that interest me and its hard to think, "How do I choose one for the rest of my ?" I'm happy with my choice in college, but working alonside children has become more and more a hobby that I like to take advantage of anytime I am alloted it. Recently, I have given a few speeches to High School students in my hometown in Maine who are interested in going to college. It's rewarding to be able to come back from NYC with my knowledge and show that and let people know that there is a huge world out there with so many opportunities and overall letting them know that its okay to be nervous, I certainly was, but to just do it. There's no other way you'll know unless you go for it whole heartedly.

I have been an elementary school teacher (2nd grade) for the past 5 years. I have been taking care of children (baby-sitting) since I was 12 years old. I adore children. I am currently a stay at home mom to my sweet, happy & easy going 9 month old son. Being home gives me the availability to care for children on a flexible calendar.

I worked as a full-time live-out nanny for 2 years in my hometown with an amazing family. I was responsible for 4 children. The boys consist of a set of twins, Banks and Evans, which are 5. They started Kindergarten the last year I was with them and we did homework together every day. I also taught them how to read. They loved flash cards! Will, who is 4, was born with 2 club feet. We struggled through many surgery's and behavioral issues but, he is such a wonderful and brave child. Will has truley been an inspiration in my life. Sarah Katherine is now 4. She is as girlie as they come and I love it! I picked all of them up daily from 3 different schools as well as carpooled them to all after-school activities and let me asure you they had a lot! I love these children like they are my own brothers and sisters. It was so hard to have to leave them and I think of them as well as speak with them often. I get to spend some time with them every visit I make home(usually at the ice cream store per their request :)). They will always hold a piece of my heart. When I realized it would be time for me to move on I decided to try something new to learn as much about myself as I possibly could. I posted my information on nannies4hire and was contacted by 7 families within 2 hours. A great family contacted me from Long Island and I moved here in July 2008. I have been a live-in nanny here for 3 children ages six, three, and two. I have learned more than I could of ever imagined! This job has been very different from my last one. I have been here since the baby was three weeks old and I spend 90% of my time with her. So, I have experience with newborns and up. I deeply love this family but, they really only needed a live-in for the first 2 years with the new baby. I have basically raised her and it breaks my heart to think of not seeing her sweet little face every day but, life happens and you have to roll with the punches! I will miss them just like I miss my previous family but, I am excited for more new experiences! Thank you for taking the time to read about me. I look forward to becoming part of a new family and bringing my knowledge with me to help mold great relationships with new children.(CPR and First Aid Certified...worked as a life guard in highschool)

Sherima L.

Sherima is a fantastic nanny who worked with us full time for 6 months and part time for years. She is loving, dedicated and trustworthy. She is incredibly reliable and we had an amazing experience with her from the week my son was born into his toddlerhood. I would recommend her without any reservations and as a would not know what I would have done without her as a working mom! - Natasha

Ruth M.

Ruth was with me for about 4 years. And honestly I don't know what I would of done without her. She went above and beyond for my family. She was always on time and available when I needed her last minute. Always did extra stuff for me without being asked. She was overall amazing! My family and I moved out of the state and we were sad to let her go. The next family will be lucky to have her! - Karen

Ruth M.

Ruth was an amazing babysitter to my three kids. She helped with my youngest while the eldest were in school. During the summer she took them out for walks and played outside with them all day! She helped my children learn a different language which was amazing! She was extremely flexible - Kate

Understand Nanny Responsibilities in Dix Hills, NY

Before beginning the search for a nanny, it’s important to understand what you’re looking for and if a nanny is the right choice for your child care needs. In hiring a nanny, first, you should think through what responsibilities you expect your nanny to handle. With that information, you can create a profile so that nannies can reach out to you. The boundaries for nannies duties vary from family to family. In general, a nanny is responsible for making sure your children’s needs are met, including things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active. When tasks go beyond child care, for example, housekeeping or meal preparation, it’s good practice to communicate these expectations with your nanny before hiring them. Along with the different duties that you ask for, experience and location can impact how much you should pay your nanny.

Dix Hills Nanny Interviews

Once you start connecting with prospective nannies, the next step is a nanny interview. To make things a bit easier, here’s a list of some nanny interview questions to consider asking:

  • Do you have experience being a nanny?
  • How do you handle tantrums? Can you share an experience disciplining children?
  • What sort of household tasks are you open to doing?
  • Are you open to a live in arrangement in Dix Hills? Do you have experience being a live in nanny?
  • Are you open to being a nanny in a nanny share?
  • Do you have any references?
  • Are you trained in First Aid or CPR in Dix Hills?
  • Do you have a driver’s license in NY? Do you own a car?
  • What salary are you seeking? Are you open to being paid through direct-deposit, pay stubs?
  • What are your expectations around over-time pay and vacation time?

During the hiring process, it’s essential to ask for references, and by asking their references questions you gain a better understanding of they will fit in your family. As you get closer to hiring a nanny, be sure to run a background check to ensure your kids are in good hands. When evaluating a prospective nanny, it’s essential to make sure you’re setting the foundation for a good relationship with your nanny. You can do this by being clear about your expectations around nanny responsibilities and compensation, and of course, by being friendly and welcoming! And of course, as you learn how to hire a nanny, Nanny Lane's nanny services are here to help you along the way.
