Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Crafts! I don't mean in a "hand print turkey" sort of way. I'm morally opposed to presenting children with an outcome and having them follow set steps. Rather than discrete projects, I teach open-ended skills. Watercolor painting and embroidery are my two favorites, for example. Diverse application of a base set of skills promotes problem solving in a way that working through defined steps to a defined outcome does not.
The most important part about being a nanny...
To love the child for who they are (always) and to be having fun right alongside them (much of the time)
My experience with special needs children...
I'm diagnosed with both autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. My mission is to be the person I needed as child...but that doesn't stop at ASD and ADHD! Beyond common developmental disorders, I have experience supporting children in need of a wide range of emotional and behavioral support. My central belief is the importance of building up the good in children instead of trying to crush maladaptive behaviors, as often their joy and self-esteem becomes collateral. "If you can't walk inside we're leaving the museum" vs. "I see your body has a lot of energy! Let's go do jumping jacks together in the courtyard before we explore more".
