A little bit about me

Hello,

My name is Cherokee. I am a nanny and private childcare consultant for babies and early childhood development.

Love and support are the two greatest gifts you can give to your child. My passion is to support the family unit as an extension of the family. I believe in the old adage ‘It takes a village to raise a child’. Therefore, I perform many tasks related to child-rearing including laundry, meals, and education.

I work using a schedule. Its important that children have a routine to follow, as they navigate their day. I also incorporate many opportunities to practice autonomy which is critical for children to feel heard and respected. Ages 0 through 8 are the primary years of development best capitalized on through engagement, creativity, encouragement, nurturing, Consistency and fun!

With the right perspective, parenting is a fun and enjoyable experience. Allow me to work with your family in a safe, loving and nurturing manner.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I've cared for many children over the years both outside of and inside of my family. I will say the most inciteful experience was as an aunt to five nephews and nieces and as a parent of my own child. I developed unique perspective on child rearing based on a combination of my own readings and observances both prior to and while raising my own child. I've used this with others people's children with positive results. I specialize in utilizing early childhood development as the foundation for success. With the right care and attention, the foundational years will be enough to help them navigate the teenage years more smoothly.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I don’t use the television. Instead, I simply redirect their attention to a different activity and then once engaged, I turn the tv off. In the early years children are longing for greater involvement in their environment so my approach is to capitalize on that. Not only will this show children how many wonderful things there are to engage in outside of tv but will exercise their minds to Create.

Education is also extremely important to me. Since I believe reading is the foundation for success in our modern world, I have several methods that I use to introduce a child to reading readiness. With consistency, a child will not only learn to read but Enjoy reading. In my opinion, if a child Enjoys reading, half the education battle is won since school heavily relies on books and reading comprehension.

I also engage children with activities that enhance their curiosity and in active daily exercise play. Its best to expend their energy in ways they find exciting and fun.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Nurturing the growth and development of a child into a happy, whole being who can utilize their words to express themselves, perform daily functions on their own and learn to be an integral part of the family who feels seen, heard and respected is the most important part of being a nanny. A child’s caretakers are shaping a Whole Life. This is a very serious matter. A child is a blank slate. BLANK. We fill it with our own beliefs from what they eat, to how they spend their time, to how they resolve problems, to whether or not they even have joy in life. It’s important to keep this in mind as the days, months and years progress. Are we taking the time to ENJOY our own children, not just take care of them? Understanding the important place we hold in their lives, as the shaper of their life, is the most important part of being a nanny.

My experience with special needs children...

Special needs is a broad category. I have experience taking care of a child with autism, however since each child is different, its really a matter of getting to know the child and how best to work within the framework of who that child is. I discovered that each child is unique whether we choose to categorize them as “normal” or “special needs” and as a unique individual with their own ideas, thoughts and opinions on things, its best to provide support, discipline and guidance in ways that suit that individual best. Some basics across the board for ALL children is their desire to be heard and respected, for autonomy and to have fun. Yes, with special needs, sometimes there is more time required to achieve a stated result, but parenting = teaching and teaching = patience. I have also discovered that people categorized as “special” offers everyone else an opportunity to slow down and to engage on a deeper level than we may otherwise if the child was not special needs.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I have many favorite nanny moments when i watch them grow and development. I also enjoy walking them through the neighborhood or playing with them outside.
