Tanya
"Emily was our summer nanny in 2021 while she was home from college, caring for our 3yo and 6yo. She was very communicative with me, letting me know if she was ever running late, needed to leave early, or was unwell. She played really well with both kids, spending time individually with each doing what they loved, and found activities that both would enjoy. She is very patient and kind, and did an awesome job keeping bickering to a minimum (which is no easy task with my 2). Emily is very responsible, paying attention to the kids' safety and reporting anything that she was concerned about with either child. I would hire her again without a second thought."

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I completed an internship program in the special education department of Van Arsdale Elementary school in 2019, and despite reconfirming my passion for working with children, both on and off the spectrum of special needs I found discontentment with the way institutional education addresses the individual needs of each child. One size of help can not possibly fit all children.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

In my past work, I've found that creating our own board games/outside games helps encourage creativity, as well as cooperation, fort building is another strong suit of mine, as is jewelry making, and at-home science experiments.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Being flexible. Yoga has helped me become more comfortable with going with the flow, adjusting as necessary to whatever arises. Kids are super unpredictable, whether it's the questions they ask, or their unique ways of problem-solving, being able to adapt to whatever circumstance arises, while also remaining calm, cool, and collected amongst the wonderful chaos kids bring, makes each moment more authentic and enjoyable for both me and the child(ren).

My experience with special needs children...

I worked, both at the high school and elementary level, with children in special education departments. In highschool, I spent my off hour in the gym with the kids in our Special-Ed department, dodge ball and tag were some of the most popular games we'd play as a group. At the elementary level I worked as more of an educator, leading speech pathology sessions as well as word identification puzzles, and I spent an hour with the fifth-graders doing math twice a week. Independently, I was able to lead a lego-robot engineering session with kids one-on-one from the department, helping me build deeper connections and understanding of the children and their personal needs.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Once, when taking my kiddos to the zoo, a nice worker complimented me on "my children" and the use of their manners, before I could reply, the eldest brother chimed in: "She's not our mom! She wears wayyyyy more rings, and always wears sandals". I do wear quite a bit of jewelry, and often find it's a great ice breaker when meeting new kids, as each of my pieces has a story. And I promise I have plenty of close-toed shoes that I wear quite often.
