Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I enjoy doing crafts, such as painting and building. As well as finding things that can be made to be used functionally. I believe that a child, especially infants and toddlers can grow to be proud of the work that they do and if that work can be displayed, they can grow a sense of responsibility for the items they create. I have also done extensive research on Reggio-Emelia practices, which encourage children to be apart of nature and to help foster the ecosystem around them and how they can grow to respect nature. So going on walks with kids and helping foster a green thumb by gardening and showing them the benefits of nature.
My experience with special needs children...
I helped care for my nephew for 3 years before getting an actual early childhood education job. He came to live with my parents and me when he was two years old. He was already speech-delayed and as time went on, there were more and more markers for autism. He was diagnosed autistic two years later and was still pretty non-verbal. This time taught me how the patience and communication skills necessary for someone who has special needs, as well as, how to advocate for the proper care of children who need alternative forms to learning and communication as well.
