More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
My most recent job was a Camp Counselor
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
At the camp I worked at, we would always do random crafts and fort builds! I also love music and the arts, so we could paint, draw, or get really crazy and make an at-home movie! I also love being outside or just play board games inside. Of course electronics are in a lot of our lives so we can wind down at the end of the day with a good movie or video games (whichever the child prefers) but throughout the day try to stay away from them.
The most important part about being a nanny...
The most important part about being a nanny is making a child feel excited to see their nanny is there and feel safe being with me. After a child feels safe they can truly let themselves be who they want to be and shine as their own individual.
My experience with special needs children...
My brother, who is an adult now, is special needs and lives in a nursing home because of a car accident he was in as a teen. I grew up surrounded by all sorts of special needs individuals who all had their own corks. I was also involved in a school program called Best Buddies, where a special needs student would be paired with a more outgoing person and they would help them interact more in the community.
The most important part about being a nanny...
My favorite nanny moment (or camp moment) was surprisingly with the more troubled children. Some children of course have a more difficult time than other to fit in so they act out to get attention. One child in particular, Luke (age 7), was rather angry a lot of the time and would have rage fits where he would turn red and freak out. So we worked for about a week with helping him calm down and to recenter himself and figure out what made him so angry. I would give him “special tasks” like making paper hats or anything to distract him. By Friday he was without any rage incidents and was sitting by himself drawing. So of course I went over to see what he was doing and He had laid out about 20 paper hats with a line on them. I asked what they were for and he said he made one for everyone in the class and the line was for them to put their name. He was soooo happy with himself and handed them out to everyone, he even made me one that I still have in my keep sake box.
