I love arts and crafts with kids, and letting them just create their interpretation of whatever it is we're trying to make. Cooking is fun with children, getting them to eat what they may not normally. Outside time is a must, playing games, and I love story time.

I believe that providing a nurturing environment while caring for children is key. That can include play time, meal time, even nap time. Building a connection of trust with the family is a must.
My experience with special needs children...
I worked at a therapeutic preschool for 8 years. I was the nutritionist/chef for the school and mostly stayed in the kitchen. However, I spent a lot of time watching our therapists and teachers in action. As a new mother at the time, I really took everything I learned from them to heart. I also took a couple of trainings from the therapist at the Center during our monthly work meetings. Also, I was a preschool Sunday school teacher at the church we attended on the Central Coast, and there were a couple of children who had sensory sensitivity, autism, and who was deaf in one ear. While that was only for a couple of hours each week, it was still a learning venture for me.
The most important part about being a nanny...
When I was a live-in nanny, I lived in a granny unit on the family's property. It was a Saturday morning, my day off, and I was awakened by one of the boys who was carrying his sippy cup. I opened my eyes, a little startled, and he asked if I could go in and make his "chocky milk", because his parents were still asleep. HA! He didn't even bother going to their room to wake them up, but he went outside across the deck to wake me up. Of course I made him his chocolate milk so he could watch Saturday morning cartoons. I even watched them with him for a bit.
