One of my absolute favorite nanny moments happened on a rainy afternoon when we decided to build an epic, living-room-spanning pillow fort. One of the children I care for, who usually prefers quiet, independent play and can get overwhelmed easily, took the lead engineer role directing where every couch cushion and heavy blanket should go. Seeing them step out of their shell, beam with pride as we crawled inside our cozy cave, and excitedly hand me their favorite picture book to read by flashlight was pure magic. It was one of those quiet, powerful reminders of why I love this work: building a safe space where a child feels so comfortable and confident that they can completely let their guard down and just play.
