A little bit about me

Hi! My name is Lexi Appel and I am 21 years old. I’m a senior at UW-Madison and graduated early in December 2024 with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies. I’m home for the summer before starting graduate school at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service in late August, where I’ll be earning my MSW with a focus on children’s therapy. I absolutely love working with kids and have tons of experience! I babysat throughout high school and worked at a summer daycare for three years, caring for children ranging from 1 and a half to 5 years old. I’m energetic, adventurous, and fun-loving, and I always strive to make kids feel seen, heard, and valued. I’ve played soccer my whole life and love staying active, whether it’s playing outside, doing crafts, or finding new ways to keep kids engaged. I’m looking for a nannying position from mid-May to early August and would love to be a part of your family this summer!

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have extensive experience working with children of all ages. I babysat throughout high school, caring for multiple children at once and ensuring their safety and engagement. I also worked at M.A.T.S.S. Kids’ Gym for three summers, where I planned fun and educational activities for children ranging from toddlers to preschoolers. There, I managed daily routines, created a stimulating learning environment, and helped foster social development.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love staying active and playing games with kids, whether it’s running around outside, playing sports, or coming up with fun challenges. I enjoy creating silly games that make them laugh, like guessing which hand a ball is in or performing playful magic tricks. I’m all about keeping kids engaged and having fun, whether it’s through soccer, tag, or other sports. Activities like hide-and-seek and obstacle courses are always a hit, and I loved doing them as a kid myself. I was really outgoing and always ready to dive into any adventure!

The most important part about being a nanny...

To me, the most important part about being a nanny is building a strong trust and respect with the children. I want them to feel comfortable around me, knowing that they can rely on me, but also that I’m here to have fun with them. Of course, their safety comes first, but I also believe it’s key to create an environment where they can laugh, play, and enjoy their time. I think it’s all about finding a balance — being firm enough to make sure they listen and follow the rules, but also being a friend they can trust and have fun with. That’s what makes the experience so rewarding.

My experience with special needs children...

I’ve had a range of experiences working with children, including those with special needs. During my summer at a daycare, I worked with children who had autism but were placed in a program that wasn’t suited for them. This pushed me to learn quickly on my own how to adapt and make decisions about how best to support them. Additionally, I facilitated a social skills group for children with special needs at a therapy office during my internship, where I learned how to build connections while balancing being both a supportive friend and a guide. These experiences have taught me how to approach each child’s needs with patience and understanding.

The most important part about being a nanny...

One of the toddlers I worked with never fell asleep during nap time. He would cry and scream, waking up the other kids, and they would end up taking him out of the room. When I came in one morning, I found out about this, and I didn’t think it was the best approach, as I felt he needed to learn to sleep on his own. That day, I was determined to help him. I sat with him, and we instantly connected. Because he felt comfortable with me, he finally fell asleep in my arms. I was the only one who managed to help him get to sleep, and after that, he started listening to me more. It was a special moment for me, as it showed how building trust can make a big difference.
