In previous positions, I was a nanny for twins who are now 3 years old (boy and a girl) and a little girl who will soon turn 5. Some days I had all 3 children and on some days, when the oldest girl was in pre-school or with her mother, I had only the twins. At times, I would assist the mother in taking the children to the doctor or other appointments (3 children that small are a handful!). During the warmer weather (especially summer), the mother and I will take the children to the zoo or do other activities with them. I did arts & crafts with the children, lots of painting and coloring, taught them their numbers and ABCs, taught them new words, danced, sang, played and ran with them outside, read to them, comforted them when needed and showed them affection -- whatever they needed. I was also concerned that I helped to build their self-esteem, because I know how important this is at a young age. I cooked meals, did laundry, general clean up (there is A LOT OF CLEAN UP with 3 children that age!). :) It is a completely different "ballgame" with twins! I was usually alone with the 3 children while the mother shopped, runs errands, hasd some "alone time" for herself (which was greatly needed!), and I was happy I could help this family. I also worked to help their mother when the father (who is a doctor) was on call on the weekends. It was very rewarding, and I worked for them from Jan. 2009 through Aug. 2010, when they no longer needed a nanny as the children were enrolled in a private school. I worked for other families when I lived in the D.C. area. One family had two children, and the other family had 4 children. In my last position, I was a nanny/household manager for four children (ages 2, 4, 11 and 14), two dogs and two parents with long commutes, long hours and high-profile, demanding careers in the Washington D.C., area, where I lived for 34 years before moving back to Penna. in November 2007 (I grew up in Hermitage, PA.) I not only cared for and played with the children, I held "school" everyday, took them on field trips, did the laundry, prepared the meals, scheduled and took the children to doctors/dental/orthodontist appointments and sports practices and events, and I managed the household (bought groceries, took care of dry cleaning, scheduled and coordinated with repair persons, contractors, etc). I also took the dogs to the vet, and I administered daily chemo to one of the dogs. I did everything within my power to help this family as much as possible. I stayed late when needed, offered to take the children to practice at night so the parents could have a "break" from their long day, and "dog sat" while they were out of town. I also worked 10+ years (full time and then as needed over the years part-time) as a nanny for two children starting at ages 3 and 8 and stayed with their mother after the parents divorced (on a part-time basis during the school year and full time during the summer). Those "children" are now 18 and 23, and they are my Godchildren (my profile picture is with the girl who is now 18 and was taken in May 2010). I worked for them 3 different times during the years when they needed me. I adapted my schedule to theirs and always stayed late or overnight when needed. I picked up the children from school, provided a fun break and snack for them before homework, drove them to activities and picked them up, prepared dinners for the family, did entire family's laundry, shopped for groceries - school clothes and school books, registered them for private school and dancing/musical lessons, household supplies, did daily clean-up of house, and extensive tutoring during my tenure in English, grammar, sentence structure, spelling, punctuation reading and math with the boy who is now 23. It was a very rewarding experience! I basically took the initiative and did anything I could for the children and the mother. I try to anticipate my family's needs and exceed them. My families have always been very good to me and very thoughtful -- I couldn't have asked for more. I am available to be "on call" for my families and am extremely flexible -- a trait that served me well in my Govt. and corporate career. I'm loyal, honest, caring, friendly and very positive, and I'd like a family who appreciates these qualities. I am in close contact with all of the children and parents for whom I've nannied. I love and care about them. The girl who is now 18 considers me her Godmother, as well as a good friend -- an adult she can confide in and trust. It's hard to believe, but I will be taking her to college on August 14 with her mother. Where did the time go?! I also have 10 Godchildren, and I am very involved in their lives.

Understand Nanny Responsibilities in Wexford, PA

Before beginning the search for a nanny, it’s important to understand what you’re looking for and if a nanny is the right choice for your child care needs. In hiring a nanny, first, you should think through what responsibilities you expect your nanny to handle. With that information, you can create a profile so that nannies can reach out to you. The boundaries for nannies duties vary from family to family. In general, a nanny is responsible for making sure your children’s needs are met, including things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active. When tasks go beyond child care, for example, housekeeping or meal preparation, it’s good practice to communicate these expectations with your nanny before hiring them. Along with the different duties that you ask for, experience and location can impact how much you should pay your nanny.

Wexford Nanny Interviews

Once you start connecting with prospective nannies, the next step is a nanny interview. To make things a bit easier, here’s a list of some nanny interview questions to consider asking:

  • Do you have experience being a nanny?
  • How do you handle tantrums? Can you share an experience disciplining children?
  • What sort of household tasks are you open to doing?
  • Are you open to a live in arrangement in Wexford? Do you have experience being a live in nanny?
  • Are you open to being a nanny in a nanny share?
  • Do you have any references?
  • Are you trained in First Aid or CPR in Wexford?
  • Do you have a driver’s license in PA? Do you own a car?
  • What salary are you seeking? Are you open to being paid through direct-deposit, pay stubs?
  • What are your expectations around over-time pay and vacation time?

During the hiring process, it’s essential to ask for references, and by asking their references questions you gain a better understanding of they will fit in your family. As you get closer to hiring a nanny, be sure to run a background check to ensure your kids are in good hands. When evaluating a prospective nanny, it’s essential to make sure you’re setting the foundation for a good relationship with your nanny. You can do this by being clear about your expectations around nanny responsibilities and compensation, and of course, by being friendly and welcoming! And of course, as you learn how to hire a nanny, Nanny Lane's nanny services are here to help you along the way.
