Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I have babysat for 4 different families, but never as my full time occupation. I spent a week volunteering with a low income daycare in Ecuador. I also spent some time in college volunteering for a program that allowed parents of special needs children to drop their children off and spend some time with themselves.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I am always down for games. Whether that's tag or playing Candyland 7 times in a row. I also enjoy tutoring activities. I think nannying is one of the best ways to become better acquainted with the city, and ideally would like to experience all of the museums and learning opportunities with children.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I think is providing an encouraging and safe environment that is tailored towards each child. It is so important to listen to what children say, and to react appropriately to make them feel safe and cared for.
My experience with special needs children...
As I mentioned above, I had the opportunity to participate in 99 balloons. This program was created to give the parents of special needs children time to rest and reset. Once a month on a Friday night, I went to a church and a child and I were matched to spend the evening together. Sometimes I would spend all night playing sensory stimulation games with my kid, and other times we would create giant games of hide and seek in the main room. Some of my kids were non-verbal autistic, and the other I worked with was a 7 year old boy with down syndrome.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I haven't nannied, but my favorite babysitting moments were when the parents would go out during the weekend. It was so fun to cook dinners that are kid friendly, and then to get to play games or watch movies with those kids. Those were such special moments that I had with my babysitter, and I love the idea of creating those moments for other kids.
