A little bit about me

Hi!
My name is Maya, I value listening, kindness, empathy, and being silly. In my free time I study plant medicine, guitar, and Bahasa Indonesia and Balinese.

In college I worked at my school's daycare looking after kids mainly 6 months to 5 years in age.
Since then I've babysat for various neighbors. At my old house, I would babysit some neighbors in the evenings, who were 3, 5, and 7 years old. We all love playing together outside and making up games.
Most currently I babysit my 8 year old neighbor. I've known them for over a year now. We love to play outside, harvest fruit, and venture to the library.

I believe growing up with five siblings has made me a good listener and a compassionate mediator. I help my sister with her 3 year old and feel so lucky to be present for his different developmental stages.
I love being with kids because they are learning about themselves and the world for the first time and I think that is so very special.

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

In college I worked at PSU's Little Vikings daycare, looking after children 6 months-5 years in age. I primarily played with the kids, initiated snack and nap times, changed diapers, helped with feeding, and summarized days for parents.

I babysat in high school, and also did volunteer work at my old Kindergarten-8th grade school, conducting after-school activities and overseeing snack-time.

I currently babysit my neighbor's kid who is 8 years old. We spend time at the park, the library, OMSI, and the community garden. We love to play and talk and read graphic novels together!

I volunteer at Wapato Island Farm where I've done work at the Children's Garden. I've made such amazing kid and parent friends there. I love spending time in the garden with kids, it's always so much fun!

I have a nephew that I'm close with, who is currently 3 years old! I've helped care for him since he was born and love watching him grow and learn about the world around him!

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love playing with kids, whether that's role playing/ making imaginary characters and scenarios or building with blocks or making train tracks.
I also like playing the doodle game and drawing in general- on paper or with chalk outside! It's fun to see how they create and what things we can make together.
I love going on walks and saying hi to the trees, feeling the leaves of different plants. Anytime outside is a good time: playing sports, gardening, or splashing in puddles.
Reading out loud or together is also an activity that I really enjoy doing with kids. Practicing different voices or asking questions about what they see is a really soft and engaging way we spend time together.
