My beginnings in childcare started in the sixth grade, at the age of 12, with a babysitting course completed at the local hospital. From there I began babysitting mostly for families that I knew from church. As I got older I began taking on more responsibilities. When I was 15 years old I was blessed with a baby brother. My folks never hesitated to leave him with me even when he was a newborn. The summer I was 16 I nannied for a family with a one year old boy. It was a full time job, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. The following summer I nannied for them again but this time they also had a 3 month old baby girl. I nannied for them for the next two summers. For the next four and a half years, from May 2004 to April 2008, I worked full time at the local childcare center. I began working full time, during summer break, in the infant room. I worked full time, year round, following college, for one and a half years. In my care in the infant room I had ages ranging from 6 weeks up to two years of age. I also have experience with caring for children up to 10 years of age, as it was sometimes necessary for me to fill in in the other age groups at the center. I also had a steady babysitting job, every other Friday, for 4 to 6 children, ranging in age from 4 years up to 9 years old. I also was the Wednesday night nursery teacher in North Dakota. I also taught Sunday School for two years. I was a camp counselor twice for the district kids camp associated with the same church. Since May of 2008, I have been living and working as a nanny on Long Island. From May 2008 to July 2008 I worked as a shared nanny for two families for a total of six children. Starting in August of 2008 I began working for a family in Huntington, NY, as a full-time live-in, caring for their two children, who were nine months and two and half at the time. I was with this same family for nearly four years. The children, a boy and a girl are now six and half and four and half. Over the course of our four years together, we had many adventures; everything from spending quiet afternoons at the beach or the park to making gingerbread houses and Valentine’s Day treats. We went through earthquakes and hurricanes, blizzards and snow days. We learned how to make homemade marshmallows (the kid’s favorite) and homemade noodles and numerous other things as they both loved to be in the kitchen. I watched them grow from sweet, chubby cheeked babies to sturdy, confident children. Through numerous play dates I witnessed them form strong and lasting relationships with close friends. It was quite a journey with both its ups and its downs but I wouldn’t trade a moment of it for something different. I was never just a nanny to them nor were they ever just the kids I took care of, they loved me and I loved them.

I worked in a daycare for 6 years mainly in the infant/toddler rooms :). After that I became a nanny for 2 boys I had known from the daycare, at the time ages 1 and 4. That family moved out of state :( I am currently ending my time with a family because they are unfortunately moving upstate. The children were 2 months and 2 years old when I started. Now they are an amazing 3 and 15 month old pair.

My first job was at a k-6th grade afterschool program that I worked at for 3 years. I was a "counselor" that helped the children with their homework, and developed learning games to play with them. Over the years I have babysat neighborhood kids and love every opportunity I get to have fun and play with children.

Jessica is sweet as can be and took such great care of our daughter from a young age. She was great at following our schedule and is so loving and comfortable with young babies she immediately put me at ease. I love when she comes to watch our girl. - Liz

Cleanly, patient, and very fast paced. Very mature for the age she started working for me. If I needed her last minute she was there, no complaints. She even treated my girls to the nail salon when they got good grades. - Christopher Wright

Wonderful young lady who did all the duties asked. My home was always spotless and my kids loved her, especially my son. If we didn't move out of state I would've kept her around forever. Cannot go wrong with this gal. - Lean Richards

Understand Babysitter Responsibilities in Shirley, NY

Before beginning the search for a babysitter, it’s important to understand what you’re looking for and if a babysitter is the right choice for your child care needs. There are lots of benefits to hiring a babysitter such as getting the flexibility of having some more time for yourself or with your partner. When hiring a babysitter, first, you should explore the differences between a nanny and a babysitter. If you’re looking for occasional child care, babysitters are the right choice for you, but if you’re looking for more frequent care, a nanny may be better for your needs.

From there, you can think about what you expect your babysitter to handle so that you can create a profile for nannies to reach out to you. The boundaries for babysitters’ duties can vary from family to family. However, in general, a babysitter is responsible for making sure your kids’ needs are met, including things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active. When tasks go beyond child care, for example to housekeeping, laundry, or meal preparation, it’s good practice to communicate these expectations with your babysitter before hiring them. Along with the different duties that you ask for, experience and location in Shirley can impact how much you pay your babysitter.

Shirley Babysitter Interviews

Once you start connecting with prospective babysitters, the next step is to conduct an interview. To make things a bit easier, here’s a list of some babysitter interview questions to consider asking:

  • Do you have experience being a babysitter?
  • What sort of household tasks are you open and comfortable doing?
  • Do you have any references?
  • Are you trained in First Aid or CPR in New York?
  • Do you have a New York driver’s license? Do you own a car?
  • How do you handle tantrums? Can you share an experience disciplining children?

During the hiring process, it’s essential to ask for references and by asking their references questions you gain a better understanding of they will fit in your family. As you get closer to hiring a nanny, be sure to run a background check to ensure your kids are in good hands. When evaluating a babysitter that you’re considering hiring, make sure you’re setting the foundation for a good relationship with your babysitter. You can do this by being clear about your expectations around babysitter responsibilities and compensation, and of course, by being friendly and welcoming!

And of course, as you learn how to hire a babysitter, Nanny Lane's nanny services are here to help you along the way.
