I've been babysitting since I was 12 on and off, but there have been long bouts of time with specific families- the longest was my last family who lives in LA, and it lasted 18 months (I was actually very sad to leave her, they kind of adopted me into the family, but she lives so far from my home!). For this family I was picking up their daughter from school several days a week, helping with homework/tutoring, taking her to play dates and activities, making dinners, and all around playing with and entertaining her. For the last year I have been a nanny for a family with three children, 6 year old twins and a 10 year old. I cared for them over vacations and during school would pick them up, help with homework and take them to after school activities. Before that family, I watched a two year old a few days a week during the summer while her parents worked. We went to the park, went on walks, played at home and ate lunch. Her parents were using "Baby Wise" so I had to be mindful of that and be sure to treat her the specific way they wanted me to. I also have experience watching multiple children at once. When I was younger and couldn't drive, I watched my neighbors children- two neighbors who have three children each. One family had 3 girls, an infant, a 3 year old, and a 10 year old. We played at the house and at the park while their mother ran errands, went to church and worked. The other neighbor has one boy and two younger girls. I had to play with them all in such a way that they were all entertained and not fighting, as they were prone to do. I also watched my father's co-worker's two children. She called them her little monsters because of their behavioral issues, but with me they were fine. We played, swam, did crafts, and went to the park while she worked and they were fine. I love doing crafts with my charges- I always try to bring fun things to do when I know the children I'm caring for like creativity (and almost always they do). Aside from true babysitting, I have a lot of experience with my family's children. One cousin especially has me watch hers quite often, she has a son who is 7 and a daughter who is 10 months.

I come from a large family with many children. My mom is 1 of 10 (lots of aunts/uncle and tons of cousins), and my brother has 4 children of his own. I have always helped with babysitting the kids & driving them around.

I starting looking after children when I was 7, helping out with my brother when he was young after school before my parents got home. I then moved up to paid care by the time I was 15 and babysat an entire summer with 4 children ages 5, 7, and 10. After this I would babysit on and off and finally when I was 20 I got a job with an after school day care program for elementary school children ages 4 to 11.

My first nanny job was when I was 12. I babysat my tutor's 4 kids. I arrived on time at 8:30 am and I asked what it was expected of me to do. For Ariana, the oldest, I was to help her with her math homework, make sure she gets her vitamins and have a read a book. For the twins, Ethan and Christy, I played with them- board games, hide-n-seek, and Go Fish. For the youngest, Aaron, I basically had to make sure where he was at all times and feed him at the apporpriate times. In the afternoon, I took them to the park that was nearby and we spent around 3 hours there. After we walked home, I prepared their snacks and made a bottle for Aaron. For the rest of the day, they got to do what they wanted and I was there to assist if they needed.

Understand Nanny Responsibilities in Lake Forest, CA

Before beginning the search for a nanny, it’s important to understand what you’re looking for and if a nanny is the right choice for your child care needs. In hiring a nanny, first, you should think through what responsibilities you expect your nanny to handle. With that information, you can create a profile so that nannies can reach out to you. The boundaries for nannies duties vary from family to family. In general, a nanny is responsible for making sure your children’s needs are met, including things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active. When tasks go beyond child care, for example, housekeeping or meal preparation, it’s good practice to communicate these expectations with your nanny before hiring them. Along with the different duties that you ask for, experience and location can impact how much you should pay your nanny.

Lake Forest Nanny Interviews

Once you start connecting with prospective nannies, the next step is a nanny interview. To make things a bit easier, here’s a list of some nanny interview questions to consider asking:

  • Do you have experience being a nanny?
  • How do you handle tantrums? Can you share an experience disciplining children?
  • What sort of household tasks are you open to doing?
  • Are you open to a live in arrangement in Lake Forest? Do you have experience being a live in nanny?
  • Are you open to being a nanny in a nanny share?
  • Do you have any references?
  • Are you trained in First Aid or CPR in Lake Forest?
  • Do you have a driver’s license in CA? Do you own a car?
  • What salary are you seeking? Are you open to being paid through direct-deposit, pay stubs?
  • What are your expectations around over-time pay and vacation time?

During the hiring process, it’s essential to ask for references, and by asking their references questions you gain a better understanding of they will fit in your family. As you get closer to hiring a nanny, be sure to run a background check to ensure your kids are in good hands. When evaluating a prospective nanny, it’s essential to make sure you’re setting the foundation for a good relationship with your nanny. You can do this by being clear about your expectations around nanny responsibilities and compensation, and of course, by being friendly and welcoming! And of course, as you learn how to hire a nanny, Nanny Lane's nanny services are here to help you along the way.
