The most important part about being a nanny...
The most important part about being a nanny is making sure a child feels safe, loved and seen. It's crucial to me for a child to know they have choices and to respect their feelings and identity at all times while also respecting traditions, rules and expectations of the parents.
My experience with special needs children...
I am NYS certified to teach Special Education to children from ages birth - 21. I have worked with kids of various levels on the autism system, ADHD, visual impairments, hearing impairments, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.
Aside from teaching children with special needs for more than half of my life in both school and home settings, my oldest child is a cancer survivor who has ADHD, dyslexia, generalized anxiety, PTSD and long term effects of chemotherapy. I have learned to support children with diverse emotional and educational needs just by caring for my child. (Who is now a successful college student studying opera).
I have spent my life surrounded my children with various physical and learning needs. Every one had been unique and different. While there are some things that remain consistent while working with special needs, every child is unique, and the key is learning their specific needs and what strategies work for them as individuals.
