A little bit about me

I am a mother to a beautiful, smart, funny, and silly, 5 year boy. Wife to an amazing and supportive husband.
I am 46 years old and have been a nanny my entire adult life! It has been my chosen career. I grew up a small town, rural, Oklahoma girl. I went to the local junior college to study child development and received a nanny certificate after completing two jam-packed semesters of nanny related courses.

I started my career in San Antonio and cared for a very sweet and smart, two year old little girl. I cared for her nearly three years.
My next nanny family led me to Massachusetts. There I cared for a sweet and bright four year old girl and a baby boy on the way. I cared for these children for four and a half years.
The next nanny position In January of 2000, led me to Houston and the biggest adventure of my life! This is where I met my husband, just a year after moving here.
For 13 and a half years I cared for two children, and eventually a dog! As the children got older the position turned into a house manager/ nanny position. This family moved to California in 2013.
Fast forward to my current position I am caring for one little boy who just turned three. I have been his nanny since he was three months old. The mother has decided to stay at home and be a full-time mom to him and his baby brother on the way! I couldn’t be happier for this sweet family! This position will end mid December.
Every nanny family I’ve cared for have had different needs to make their lives run smoothly. Depending on your needs (Children’s laundry, meal prep [for child or entire family], scheduling/taking to appointments, errands, grocery shopping, animal care, etc.). I’ve pretty much have done it all!
I have references from aforementioned families upon request.

Understand Nanny Responsibilities in Houston, TX

Before beginning the search for a nanny, it’s important to understand what you’re looking for and if a nanny is the right choice for your child care needs. In hiring a nanny, first, you should think through what responsibilities you expect your nanny to handle. With that information, you can create a profile so that nannies can reach out to you. The boundaries for nannies duties vary from family to family. In general, a nanny is responsible for making sure your children’s needs are met, including things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active. When tasks go beyond child care, for example, housekeeping or meal preparation, it’s good practice to communicate these expectations with your nanny before hiring them. Along with the different duties that you ask for, experience and location can impact how much you should pay your nanny.

Houston Nanny Interviews

Once you start connecting with prospective nannies, the next step is a nanny interview. To make things a bit easier, here’s a list of some nanny interview questions to consider asking:

  • Do you have experience being a nanny?
  • How do you handle tantrums? Can you share an experience disciplining children?
  • What sort of household tasks are you open to doing?
  • Are you open to a live in arrangement in Houston? Do you have experience being a live in nanny?
  • Are you open to being a nanny in a nanny share?
  • Do you have any references?
  • Are you trained in First Aid or CPR in Houston?
  • Do you have a driver’s license in TX? Do you own a car?
  • What salary are you seeking? Are you open to being paid through direct-deposit, pay stubs?
  • What are your expectations around over-time pay and vacation time?

During the hiring process, it’s essential to ask for references, and by asking their references questions you gain a better understanding of they will fit in your family. As you get closer to hiring a nanny, be sure to run a background check to ensure your kids are in good hands. When evaluating a prospective nanny, it’s essential to make sure you’re setting the foundation for a good relationship with your nanny. You can do this by being clear about your expectations around nanny responsibilities and compensation, and of course, by being friendly and welcoming! And of course, as you learn how to hire a nanny, Nanny Lane's nanny services are here to help

Daycare vs. Hiring a Nanny

Choosing between putting your child in daycare and hiring a nanny can be a tough decision. While nannies are often more expensive, they provide individualized attention and flexibility. Daycares, on the other hand, prioritize socialization. Our Nanny vs Daycare guide can help you determine what's best for your family.
